Questions and Answers for Individuals Targeted for Restitution Under the American General Life & Accident Insurance Company Settlement
American General Settlement
Am I included in the settlement? How do I know if I am included in the settlement?
If at anytime you purchased a home service policy from American General Life and Accident Insurance Company, or any of the insurance Companies whose business AGLA acquired, and you made at least one payment on the policy since 1-1-82, or that policy terminated by lapse, surrender, or payment of death benefit since 1-1-82, then that policy may be included in the settlement group. A Notice package will be sent to eligible policyholders by about July 21, 2000.
"Home service" means that the agent collected the premiums periodically at the policyholder's home.
We suggest that if you have not received a Notice package by about July 21, 2000, and you think you should have gotten one, call us back.
How much relief will I get? What types of relief will I get?
A Notice package is being mailed by American General Life and Accident Insurance Company to persons who are members of the settlement class. Each class member's Notice should have information specific to that class member, to assist in determining what relief they may receive. The information in the class Notice package will be needed to properly consider what relief the class member may receive. Class members should receive a Notice package by about July 21, 2000. If you have not received the Notice by then, call us back at that time.

My parent owned one of these policies but they died some time ago. Do the beneficiaries get any relief?
In some cases the answer is yes. If you know or believe that your parent had a policy from on of the life insurance companies involved, and either at least one premium was paid since 1-1-82, or that the policy terminated by lapse, surrender, or payment of death benefit since 1-1-82, then contact the settlement administrator at 800-681-4944, speak to them about your situation and ask them to send you a Notice package.
I have other types of serious disputes with American General Life and Accident Insurance Company, besides just the racially discriminatory sales. Will this settlement cover those other disputes?
Not necessarily. You may have to opt-out of the class action to preserve your rights concerning other disputes. A Notice package will be sent to persons who are included in the settlement. When you receive the Notice Package, it will have a phone number to call with staff who can help you determine if your other dispute will be covered in the settlement. |
